Protein

10G Protein for Muscle Building

Protein is the building block of muscle and critical to the development and growth of young athletes. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of protein is 19 grams for kids aged 4-8 and 34 grams for kids aged 9-13 (1). As a young athlete, it is essential to consume protein within a 30 minute window post-game to refuel and replenish muscles.

 

Whey Protein Concentrate
HERO FUEL uses whey protein concentrate (WPC) as its first ingredient. 
Whey protein is derived from milk via a filtration process to create a concentrated powder consisting of 80% protein. At the conclusion of this process, WPC contains 4% lactose making it easy on stomachs. Even those with a lactose intolerence should not notice any upset as each HERO Bar contains .28g of lactose (2). 
Whey protein is a complete protein, meaning it contains all 9 of the essential amino acids (the amino acids that our body must get from food).
Whey also has the added benefit of being one of the most quickly digesting protein sources. This means it fuels muscles quickly after exercise to assit in the recovery and rebuilding phase.

HERO FUEL contains a carbohydrate blend consisting of approximately 50% complex carbs and 50% simple carbs.

This allows for both quick energy from the simple sugars and longer, more sustained energy from the complex carbs. The relatively limited quantity of sugar (8g) ensures athletes avoid the spike and crash that comes from too much sugar so they can stay in the blood sugar "performance zone" for as long as possible when competing.

Fiber

7g Fiber to Stay Full Longer

Fiber, found in fruits, vegetables, whole gains, and beans, is a type of carbohydrate not digested by the gut. Fiber aids in digestion and creates a feeling of fullness in the stomach. It is recommended that kids consume 25 grams of fiber per day. 
Given that fiber is mostly found in fruits and vegetables, it is no surprise that kids often have difficultly getting enough in their diet. As a young athlete, Fiber has three important benefits:
1. Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar levels so that energy is provided over a sustained period of time- no peaks and no crashes.
2. Soluble fibers are prebiotic, meaning they encourage the production of healthy bacteria in the gut. 
3. Since Fiber it is not digested, it creates a feeling of satiation or "fullness" without the extra calories. For athletes competing over a long tournament or meet day, this helps avoid hunger cravings and keeps their focus on performing. 

Caloric Balance

A great concept to keep in mind when fueling your athlete is the 50-25-25 rule. 
 In general, and especially on game day, you should aim for 50% of calories to come from carbohydrates, 25% from protein, and 25% from fats. 
This balance comes from Health.gov's caloric recommendations for kids, slightly adjusted to incease protein and decrease fat percentages to better suit the needs of competitive athletes.
