Coming from the great state of Oklahoma, Eli Griffin is a wrestler to remember. He's tough, motivated, and controlled out on the mat, and it definitely shows. But Eli has a keen ability to see what wrestling is all about: it's just plain old fun. It takes hard work, but the sport isn't worth it if you don't have fun with it. That's a great mindset to have, and we at HERO admire his focus.
Be sure to read on, learn a little bit more about Eli, and hopefully be able to gain some insight to help make your wrestler the best they can be. We are extremely proud to have had Eli as a part of the Quest, and we can't wait to see what he throws down in the future.
Why do you enjoy wrestling?
Mostly, I enjoy it because it’s just plain fun, but I also enjoy all the things I have learned through wrestling, like self-control, mental toughness, and staying calm even in tough situations.
What's the most important thing wrestling has taught you?
The most important thing wrestling has taught me is that when I think I have given my all, I can always give more.
What's the best advice your coach has given you?
The best advice my coaches have given me is to stay calm, just to do what I do, and remember that it is all practice until I am in high school.
How do you handle tough defeats?
I handle tough losses by battling back and working even harder in the practice room.
What’s your proudest achievement as a wrestler?
My proudest achievement is probably when I lost my quarter-finals match at the 2013 Flo Kickoff Classic, then battled back and won 6 straight matches to get 2nd Place.
What's your favorite wrestling move?
The chicken wing!
Do you have a hero or role model?
Tony Ramos because of his dedication to the sport and his Hawkeye style of wrestling.
What's your favorite subject in school?
Do you play any sports aside from wrestling?
I don't play any sports any more. I used to play baseball and football, and I am thinking about running cross-country in the fall.
Do you have any other hobbies outside of wrestling?
Just hanging out with my friends, yo-yoing, and riding my ripstick.
What are your goals for your wrestling career?
My goal is to be a division 1 wrestler, win four NCAA National titles as a team and as an individual, then go to the Olympics and win a gold medal.
What are your goals for the next 1-5 years?
Five years from now, I will be a Junior in high school, so I hope I’ve won Oklahoma Junior High State twice as well as three Oklahoma High School state championships. I also hope to keep my 4.0 grade point average and continue to be involved in my church youth group, which does mission work in our city.
What is your biggest area you could improve?
I need to get more technical on my shots and be able to shoot great to both sides of my opponent.
